Inside the radio airplay charts
The Band of Heathens are in the midst of an impressive run. This marks the band's second week in the #1 slot on the Americana Music Association (AMA) chart and 10th straight week in the top 5. Remarkable results for a self-released studio debut that has been out since May.
And it's not just the overall ranking that makes an impression. Although the Heathens' total spins and reporting stations have tilted slightly downward in recent weeks, their frequency of plays-per-station (PPS) continues to nudge upward. Last week, the Heathens and Micky & the Motorcars both averaged a chart-topping 8.63 PPS; this week the Heathens stand alone at 8.95.
It might be easy to downplay those PPS numbers since the Band of Heathens sit in the overall #1 spot, but the number of reporting stations for the other artists in the top 5 is significantly higher (and their PPS concurrently lower).
| Artist | Album | Stations | Plays | PPS |
| Band of Heathens | Band of Heathens | 40 |
358 |
8.95 |
| Little Feat and Friends | Join the Band | 46 |
357 |

| Carrie Rodriguez | She Ain't Me | 55 |

6.92 |
Those stations playing the Band of Heathens are playing them frequently. One example is XM's X Country, where the Heathens have spent the last two weeks atop the airplay count. (This week's chart is not yet available.) The Heathens continue to place steadily on the Texas Music Chart. "Heart on My Sleeve" sits in the #36 spot, which is roughly its average position over the past couple months.
The real story on the Texas Music Chart (TMC) is Jason Boland & the Stragglers. Despite surgery that sidelined Boland just as Comal County Blue was heading toward its August 26 release, the band has received tremendous support from regional radio.
This is the third straight week atop the TMC for lead single "Comal County Blue." Its 1803 spins this week, though down slightly from a peak of 1837 last week, is still 300+ more than the closest competition. In fact, in each week atop the chart "Comal County Blue" has received more airplay than any other single this summer.
Despite Boland & the Stragglers' regional strength, they've yet to crack the AMA's top 40. That is likely to change, however. The album debuts this week at #2 on Billboard's genre-agnostic Top Heatseekers chart. And as Boland recovers he's slowly able to add radio appearances. Last night, for example, he was the guest on X Country's "Hang Time" with Jesse Scott where I learned of at least one commonality connecting Boland and the Band of Heathens: Momo's, which Boland listed as one of his favorite places to hang out, is also the Heathens' home away from home.
Here's a quick look at the Texas artists appearing on both the AMA and TMC charts this week:
