Guy Clark update

Thanks to the many of you who have read my April 29 entry defending Guy Clark from perceived slights by Austin journalist Dave Thomas. Dave and I exchanged emails a few times that week, and he submitted a follow-up posting clarifying his comments and detailing our correspondence. But the best part is he attended Guy's concert in Austin last week, and he was blown away:

Did I even once accuse Guy of being ornery? Not a chance. He couldn't have seemed more pleased to be there or more at ease mixing songs with jokes with songs.

McKay Brothers @ Gruene Hall

The McKay Brothers braved the sweltering heat to play another free afternoon show on Sunday at Gruene Hall. Somehow, despite the complete lack of air movement inside the dancehall, Noel and Hollin still managed to sound great as usual. I got a chance to chat briefly with Noel during one of their breaks. Still no release date or label for their sophomore album, produced by Lloyd Maines.

McKay Brothers in the NY Times

No offense to Noel and Hollin, but I never would have guessed the McKay Brothers are paradigms of Texas style. But the New York Times thinks so. The NYT Style Magazine ran a nice piece on the Bandera brothers earlier this month. It's always funny to read a sophisticated Yankee's take on Texans. Example: "Their authenticity is as welcome as a drive down a lonely road in a dusty pickup." That's in addition to the cattle, "chow," and other near-obligatory, patronizing references. An interesting read nonetheless. Congratulations to the McKay Brothers.

512 Film Night

Thanks to McGuckin Entertainment PR, I had the opportunity to meet some talented, independent filmmakers Austin this week. AMS Production Group hosted 512 Film Night at its West Lake Hills workspace on Thursday evening. Nine local filmmakers were granted the opportunity to showcase short films. Particularly good were "I Feel Your Pain" by Arnie Reyes and "Evil Twinkie" by Dos Gringos Productions. But the screenings weren't limited to just dramatic shorts. Reckless Kelly showcased its new video for "Stick Around," featuring a prison setting and a cameo by Billy Joe Shaver. Thanks to Jill McGuckin and Heidi Labensart for an enjoyable evening.

Austin, Robyn, and The Greencards

A great night of music yesterday at the Saxon Pub. My friend Aaron and I arrived just before Austin Collins' 8 pm set. Fresh off winning a slot at this year's ACL Festival, Austin and band had a rough start but played well overall, pumping out most of the songs from debut CD Something Better while working through some sound issues. Also included in the set were four solid covers: Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues," the Bottle Rockets' "Thousand Dollar Car," the Drive By Truckers' "Carl Perkins' Cadillac" in honor of Fat Caddy Records' Jon Pattillo, and one of my all-time favorites, Whiskeytown's "16 Days."

At 10 pm KGSR began its live broadcast. Fresh off a 30-minute break, Austin played a shorter set, really nailing it this time. Next up was Robyn Ludwick, who sounds just as good live as on her debut For So Long. Headlining the performance was former Austin denizens The Greencards, who bowled over the capacity crowd with their energetic newgrass, including songs from their upcoming Dualtone release Weather and Water.

A great night of music indeed.
