Walt Wilkins & the Mystiqueros,
Diamonds in the Sun

Label: Palo Duro Records
Released: 2007

(4 out of 5)

Texas born Walt Wilkins has already created a name for himself as an established songwriter, penning such hits as "Songs About Texas," recorded by Pat Green, and "Seven Hillsides," recorded by Ricky Skaggs. Now Wilkins has teamed with Bill Small, John Greenberg, Ramon Rodriguez, and Marcus Eldridge to form the Mystiqueros. And they're joined by producer and steel guitar virtuoso Lloyd Maines for their recorded debut, Diamonds in the Sun. With some great harmonies, skilled writing, and even three good cover songs thrown in, this masterful CD makes for some very enjoyable listening. Leading off with Wilkins' own "Trains I Missed," which is a classic song about missed opportunities through life; a foot-tapping cover of The Bands' "The Shape I'm In"; and ending with the uplifting original "Stand Up Seven," which has the feel of a church revival — the album attempts to capture the different waves of life. Of course, you can't go through life without some highs and lows. Wilkins and the Mystiqueros capture those moments well with songs such as "You Can't Outdrink the Truth," "Just Like Hank," "Red River Blues," "All These Memories," and another Wilkins gem, "Get Me Gone." With the loose feel of a '70s rock band, thanks to harmonies that remind you of the Eagles combined with strong writing, Diamonds in the Sun has a little something for everyone.
