Robyn Ludwick's For So Long is a remarkable debut that melds heartfelt country and Appalachian folk with one of the most distinctive voices in Texas music today.
The opener, "What Do I Know," is a perfect introduction, with Ludwick's smoky voice trilling through comparisons of her own rich love life to those who are presumably less fortunate. "For So Long" is another showcase track, with Ludwick accompanied by the banjo pickings of producer Danny Barnes. The emotive "I Am" and "Live My Life "compete to be the album's vocal centerpiece.
Throughout the album Ludwick benefits from the support of such musicians as brother Bruce Robison, sister-in-law Kelly Willis, Jon Dee Graham, Carol Young of The Greencards, Rich Brotherton from Robert Earl Keen's band, and husband and bassist John Ludwick.
If there's one complaint, it's that the songs tend to sound somewhat similar. But that's mitigated by the fact the overall sound is so strong and pleasing.
After years of supporting her musical family, Ludwick clearly is ready to make her own mark on the Texas music scene. For So Long should enable her to do just that.
