Various Artists,
Rollergirls: Music from the A&E Television Series

Label: KOCH Records

Released: 2006

(3 out of 5)

Like its namesake reality show, Rollergirls: Music from the A&E Television Series is full of spunk.

This high-energy salute to the TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls features the show's theme — "Play My Game" by the Donnas (listen) — plus 11 other songs ranging from Angie Heaton's grrl rock ("Rollerskate" – listen) to Red Meat's honky-tonk ("The Girl with the Biggest Hair" – listen).

Highlights include the stirring "Ready to Rise" by Vaughan Penn (listen), Jaime Paxton's picture-perfect pop number "Five Years" (listen), Ani DiFranco's modernistic "Amazing Grace" (listen), and the sardonic "Badass" by Austin's own Kacy Crowley (listen). Other Texas contributions come courtesy of Dale Watson ("Way Down Texas Way" – listen) and the Addictions ("Rollergirl" – listen).

Each of the songs is pulled from other works, but collected here they provide a great party soundtrack and a fun way to harness the rollergirls' energy without having to risk life and limb on the track.
