It's been nearly 6 years since Tim DeLaughter unveiled his "c'mon get happy" vision with The Beginning Stages of The Polyphonic Spree. Much has changed in the world since then, but the Polyphonic Spree has somehow managed to maintain its collective smile and spread its irrational exuberance around the globe. Now, though, some cracks are beginning to appear in the happy facade, and the Spree we get in The Fragile Army is a band that is redefining itself in adolescence. Gone are the robes, replaced by black fatigues sporting universal symbols of peace. Gone too is the chirpy optimism, replaced by hope tinged with more than a little doubt. These are, as they say in "Light to Follow," mixed-up times, and it's impossible for any artist to not react. "The Fragile Army" subtly pokes at our nation's military policies, and "The Championship" similarly wonders about the divisiveness of modern politics. But the strongest critiques come in the self-reflection of "Younger Yesterday" and "We Crawl," where DeLaughter's vocals are melancholy and honest as he marvels at the fragility of hope and the redemptive power of unity. Some may shy away from a darker Polyphonic Spree, but to me this evolution showcases just how good this band can be. And it's not an overwhelming darkness; the message is still one of hope and peace, but tempered by the recognition that sometimes it's hard to keep pushing forward. The Polyphonic Spree is not a cult, nor is it a novelty act. Instead, it's a multi-faceted collective that — despite the obstacles — believes in the redemptive power of art and love. And it's this beautifully steely resolve that keeps them going, and us listening.

The Fragile Army is available as a standalone CD and in a special CD/DVD edition featuring a behind-the-scenes documentary. Shot by band co-leader Julie Doyle, "Raise Your Ears and Hold On to Your Heart" provides a fascinating window into the recording process. If you've ever wondered just how they manage to make an album with 20+ musicians, then this CD/DVD edition is your best bet.
